Bio

My name is Marcee Hinds, and taught American history for the last 10 years at Baker High School. I am so excited to have been teaching at Barton Academy for the past 3 years.  I have been married to my wonderful husband, Michael, for 20 years, and we have two beautiful daughters, Molly, 12, and Abigayle, 7. I was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, and graduated from Theodore High School in 2000. I received my undergraduate degree in secondary education from the University of South Alabama in 2011 and earned my Master of Liberal Arts degree in history from Spring Hill College in 2016.

In the spring of 2019,  I was selected as the James Madison Fellow for Alabama. The James Madison Fellowship provides funds to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. In fall 2019, I returned to the University of South this Fall and began my Master of Education with an emphasis in Constitutional Studies/Social Studies. I received my M.Ed. in Spring 2022.

In 2020, I was honored to be chosen as the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Alabama History Teacher of the Year. I was also named a Top 12 finalist for National History Teacher of the Year. In 2024, the Alabama Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution selected me as their Outstanding Teacher of American History.

I have worked with multiple historical sites, such as George Washington's Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, the Library of Congress, and the American Revolution Institute. For the 2024-2026 school years, I will serve as a member of the C.L.E.A.R. Thinking Teaching Cohort through Auburn University to help improve the teaching of civics education.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and pets, reading, participating in a local Mardi Gras society, and exploring my family’s genealogy. I am also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and serve as a board member for the Historic Mobile Preservation Society.
